EmberType vs Wispr Flow: Own Your Dictation, or Rent It?

Both apps do the same job — you talk, text appears in any Mac app. The differences are where your voice goes and what you pay over time. I build EmberType, so read this knowing that — but every number below is from Wispr Flow's own pricing page, current as of June 2026.

The 30-Second Version

  • Pick EmberType if you're Mac-only and want your voice processed on your machine, with a $49 one-time price. Try it free for 7 days — no account, no card.
  • Pick Wispr Flow if you need Windows, iPhone, or Android too, or you want cloud AI rewriting your phrasing as you speak — and the $12–15/month forever is acceptable.
  • The math: Wispr Flow's cheaper annual plan is $144/year. EmberType passes it at month five and saves you $383 over three years.

What You Pay Over Time

The Real Difference: Where Your Voice Goes

This is the part most comparisons gloss over. When you dictate with Wispr Flow, your audio travels to their servers, gets transcribed and cleaned up by cloud models, and the text comes back. That round trip is why it needs an account, why it needs internet, and why their privacy policy is part of your workflow.

EmberType runs OpenAI's Whisper model directly on your Mac's Apple Silicon. There is no server side. Dictate a contract draft, a patient note, or your novel on a plane in airplane mode — nothing is uploaded, logged, or used for training, because there's no code path that could. That's an architectural guarantee, not a policy promise.

Where Wispr Flow Is Genuinely Better

I'd rather you pick the right tool than my tool. Wispr Flow wins on three things:

If none of those three apply to you — you're Mac-only, you're fine with accurate verbatim transcription, and you dictate more than casually — then you're paying $144 every year for infrastructure you don't need.

FAQ

Which is better, EmberType or Wispr Flow?

EmberType for Mac-only users who value privacy and one-time pricing. Wispr Flow for multi-device users who want cloud AI formatting. For everyone in the first group, the choice costs $49 once instead of $144 every year.

Can I switch from Wispr Flow to EmberType?

There's nothing to migrate — both apps type wherever your cursor is. Run the 7-day trial alongside your Wispr subscription for a week and compare accuracy on your own voice before you cancel anything.

Does EmberType require an account?

No account, no email, no credit card. There's no cloud service to sign into — the model runs on your Mac.
